Fostering Trust, Furthering Research

Peer review is an integral part of research publication, and trust is a critical component of peer review. This year, the idea of trust has gained greater immediacy due to the challenges presented by COVID-19. Peer Review Week 2020 (September 21-25) explores the theme of Trust in Peer Review and examines how peer review can continue fostering trust and furthering research beyond the pandemic. CACTUS is a proud member of the Peer Review Week 2020 organizing committee. We look forward to contributing to the dialog around trust in peer review — and hope you will join us in these discussions!

Peer Review Week 2020

Q. What is Peer Review Week?

A. Peer Review Week is an annual global event held to draw the focus on peer review and its various dimensions: benefits, challenges, meeting those challenges, and the way forward. Each year, Peer Review Week is anchored around one theme, typically borne of current dialogs around the peer review process. This year’s theme is Trust in Peer Review. Read more about this year’s theme here.

Q. What is the significance of Peer Review Week?

A. The peer review process is central to the scientific publishing process, which itself is central to the researcher life. While the process has several benefits, gaps emerge from time to time. Among other purposes, Peer Review Week attempts to bridge those gaps using the collective power of research authors, journal editors, and of course, peer reviewers (along with other industry experts). And because peer review is largely done gratis, with the main aim of benefiting research, Peer Review Week also seeks to celebrate peer review and peer reviewers

Q. Who is involved in organizing Peer Review Week?

A. Several organizations and individuals from the scholarly publishing industry volunteer to organize Peer Review Week each year. The organizing committee includes publishers, journal editors, researchers, librarians, science communicators, research support and editing organizations, and scholarly publishing professionals. CACTUS has been involved as an organizing committee member since the Second Peer Review Week (2016) through our publication support services brand, Editage. This year too, CACTUS is a proud member of the Peer Review Week organizing committee.

Q. What does CACTUS do during Peer Review Week?

A. Each year during Peer Review Week, we actively engage with researchers and scholarly publishing professionals to explore several aspects of peer review through the theme for the year. Our Peer Review Week exclusive daily email update series is aimed at helping you stay updated on the latest, most relevant discussions around peer review. This year too, we aim to continue our efforts in furthering the discourse around peer review, through our various brands empowering Peer Review Week in several distinct ways.

Q. Where is Peer Review Week organized?

A. Peer Review Week is an entirely virtual event (even since pre-COVID times). To be a part of to this important annual industry event, you just need access to the net. And of course, to sign up for the event.

Q. How can I be involved in Peer Review Week?

A. You simply need to sign up for it. You will receive a daily update, along with a host of other resources and benefits. (See the benefits of signing up mentioned earlier.) You can also attend the free webinars and talks we have lined up during Peer Review Week, where you can listen to experts’ views on peer review as well as interact with them. We would also love to hear from you. We welcome guest posts with your thoughts on the peer review process as well as your personal stories and experiences while dealing with the peer review process, either as an author or as a reviewer. See you soon!
